How a meal for 25 turned into a feast for 60
By Sanjeev Gupta
Monika Mours story:
After I got married, my joint family of 40 was invited by my in-laws
for the customary first meal. The combined list of people who met on
that day was around sixty. We had made arrangements with a caterer
accordingly. The guests were told that we would be expecting them by
8pm. In India that would be interpreted as 8.45 pm but that was not the
case on the day. Guests began to pour in by 8. That had us worried
because the caterer was late. When he came in we learnt that he had food
for just 25 people. We were terribly upset with him but there was
little he could do at such short notice. A few minutes later, my entire
family maternal as well as marital had gathered in my new house full
strength.

I
did not want the situation to reflect badly on my in-laws and I did not
want the evening to be spoilt for my paternal family either. My
mother-in-law and I did what devotees always do when they do not have
any answers. We prayed to Devi Maa. My mother-in-law tied a mauli
(thread) around Devi Maas swaroop (image) and prayed for her help.  Â
The
dinner began. Everyone had a hearty meal and in the end we realised
that there was food left in the serving bowls that had not been refilled
through the dinner. There was so much food left over in the kitchen
that we had to give much of it away. Sixty people had enjoyed a fest
that was meant for 25 and there was still so much left over. We thanked
Devi Maa for the timely miracle that averted what could have been a
face-losing situation for my new family.Â
