In Hinduism, it is advised to avoid sleeping with our hands to the north or west. The direction your head faces while sleeping has a strong effect on your physical and mental well-being. Have you ever think that how sleeping directions effect on your body? Well it is also mentioned in Ayurveda. In order to enjoy sound sleep, one must have a bedroom with a peaceful environment.




The Indian Ayurvedic tradition believes that sleeping  positions decide the kind of energy we want coming into our life, with sleeping facing the East and South being the most beneficial. And people who sleep in these directions will receive a positive energy and will also enhance the person’s blood circulation. Thus sleeping position both has adverse as well as positive effects. According to Vishnu Puran, “It is beneficial to lie down with the head placed eastward or southward. The man who lies down with his head placed in contrary directions becomes diseased.”




It is also proved scientifically, that sleeping direction has a direct relationship with your health. We all know that Earth has a magnetic pole stretched from north to south with the positive pole at the north and the negative pole at the south. And according to scientists, humans have an innate magnetic compass, with the positive pole at the head and the negative one at the feet. And when we lay our heads on the north side, the two positive sides repel each other and there is a struggle between the two. As we know earth revolves from west to east, and suns magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic force enters our head if head is on the east and exits through feet, promoting cool heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism and we lie with electricity. But when the head is lie towards the west, cool feet and hot head. It results an unpleasant start for morning.




Further studies have suggested that humans who sleep in an East-West position have far shorter REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep cycles, in which dreams occur, compared with North-South sleepers who got more REM sleep. In this hectic life, if a person sleeps with the head facing in the south, then he would get fresh comparatively faster and it has been noticed that the efficiency of such people has increased significantly. While when a person sleeps with his head facing the north, this results in the disturbed blood circulation resulting in mental unrest and a disturbed sleep. This position can also result in the dweller experiencing physically low or high blood pressure, insomnia or a high level of cholesterol. This can be prevented by rotating the head position to south.




 It is said that South Pole is a source of positive energy and North Pole is a source of negative energy. Thus, sleeping direction has become important by considering all these aspects. As we sleeps with his head facing towards north, will keep your head cool and calm. When you wake up in the morning you will feel the freshness and positivity in you.
