Sharad Poornima as the name suggests falls on the full moon day during Sharad Ritu (season). It has got many stories attached to it.
SCIENTIFIC BELIEF - It is believed that on this day moon comes closest to the Earth. Moonlight is magnificent and unique on this day. On the night of Sharad Poornima as the moon is considered to be close its moonlight has several curative properties. This is one big reason why people spend their night under moonlight.
RELIGIOUS BELIEF - (MAHARAAS LEELA BY KRISHNA) There is also a religious aspect attached to it. It is said that on this night Lord Krishna performed raas-leela with his Gopis and Radha. That is the reason Sharad Poornima is of importance in places associated with Lord Krishna like Mathura, Braj, Vrindavan and Nathwara.
AMRIT VARSHA - It is said that Sharad Poornima is a day to get blessings from Moon God. People in different part of country celebrate it in different ways. Some people prepare Kheer (a dish made of rice-milk-sugar and dryfruits) and keep it under moonlight in order to get the nectar (Amrit). It is believed that moon's rays contain nourishing elements so it is taken as a prasad of the God of Moon.
SHARAD POORNIMA - (Time to adjust body clock) Sharad ritu is a period of time consists of two months of overlapping seasons when the summer is about to end and the winter slowly starts. During Sharad the days are warm and nights start to become cooler. This is perfect season for Pitta prakop when pitta vitiates along with other two doshas. In many parts of the country pople consume cool milk and rice flakes on this night. Sharad ritu (season) Consuming rice flakes with milk during night time is good remedy to pacify pitta in order to adjust our body according to the coming winter season.
