According to the legend when Lord Shiva found eligible brides for his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya he wanted them to get married soon. Both of them started arguing about who will get married first. In order to put things in order Lord Shiva proposed a solution. He asked both his sons that whoever will come back after a parikrama(one round,) of universe will get married at first place. Lord Kartikeya started his parikrama and soon vanished away from the site. Lord Ganesha being heavy in his physic couldn’t do so and knew that he won’t be able to win this competition. Lord Ganesha is very intelligent so he started his parikrama by revolving around his parents Lord Shiva and Godess Parvati. Lord Shiva got confused about Ganesh's action and tried to know in detail about it. Lord Ganesha replied that for me my parents are the universe so I am revolving around my universe. Upon listening this Lord Shiva was very happy and he blessed Ganesha that he will always be worshipped for his intelligence and also is the first one to be worshipped before anyone else. Lord Shiva also allowed Ganesha to get married at first place before Kartikeya.
