Tulsi leaves are considered to be very sacred and is used for worshiping Lord Krishna. It is said that without offering Tulsi leaves to Krishna the Pooja is not considered to be complete. Tulsi is always associated with purity and a highly revered and used for all religious purposes among Hindus. Inspite of being so pure and sacred Tulsi is not offered to Lord Ganesha because of a curse. There is an interesting story that describes the reason for not including Tulsi in Ganesha's worshiping.According to the legend Tulsi was the daughter of Dharmatmaja. One day she was passing by a jungle and saw Ganesha sitting there and meditating Lord Vishnu. She got very impressed with Ganesha. Ganesha was looking very attractive and charming. He was wearing yellow clothes, his body was smelling of sandalwood paste, his face was glowing as a sign of his power and intelligence. As soon as she saw the resplendent Ganesha, she fell in love with him and wished to marry him. Ganesha who got irritated as his meditation was disturbed, refused to oblige Tulsi. He told Tulsi that he has decided not to marry anyone as he feels all the problems start after marriage. He wants to meditate and attain more knowledge and thus wants to stay away from marriage. This refusal from Ganesha made Tulsi very angry. She felt insulted and cursed him that one day, he would indeed break his vow of celibacy and will get married. Ganesha cursed her in retaliation, that she would marry a demon and later, turn into a plant. Realising her mistake, Tulsi pleaded for mercy again and again. At last Lord Ganesha relented and said: "Though you shall be born as a plant, you will be regarded as supreme among the plants and you will inherit the essence of all fragrance. All the gods will be happy with your fragrance, and Lord Vishnu will be specially glad to receive worship with your leaves. But you shall never be acceptable in the worship offered to me". This is the reason why Tulsi is held so sacred and grown in temples and houses and is offered in worship to Vishnu and not Ganesha.Thanx Neha Ghai Pandit
