Shravani Teej or Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the third day of Shukla paksha in the Shravan month. It is also known as Madhusrava tritiya and Choti Teej. Haryali Teej got this name because of heavy rain in this season and all around us we can see green trees and plant.
This festival is celebrated in the memory of the union of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva. This festival is known as Hariyali Teej in India. However, it is also famous as 'Madhushrava Teej'. According to a legend, Parvati kept fasts during this period to impress Lord Shiva. These fasts helped Parvati in marrying Lord Shiva. It is also believed that on this day, Parvati completed hundred years of her austerities. Hence, women celebrate this day for a happy married life.
Hariyali Teej is basically a festival of women and girls. Haryali Teej is celebrated with a lot of zeal in India. On this occasion, a newly married woman is called back to her home on her first Teej. Other woman receive Singhara from their in-laws which includes clothes, ornaments, beauty products, mehndi, sweets etc. Mehndi and swings play an important role on this day. Women decorate their hands with mehndi and enjoy on swings while singing folk songs.
Haryali Teej is also the festival swings. Swings are an intricate part of the festival. Beautifully decorated swings are hung from trees on which the women folk swing and sing the traditional teej songs.
It is said that whosoever invokes and worship Gauri known as teej mata on this day, will get divine blessings of Mother. A common belief is that women observing Nirjal Vrat on Teej are said to be blessed with long and healthy life of their husband by Teej Mata Parvati.
