Nag Panchami is celebrated on Panchami of Shukla Paksh in Sharavan Masa. This year, the festival will be celebrated on 11th August, Sunday in Hast Nakshatra. This festival is celebrated with faith and fervor. On this day, worshiping Lord Shiva, the holder of serpent, is considered auspicious. That’s why Snakes are worshiped on this day.
Right from the times when mankind started acquiring some sort of culture, Sun and Snake have been invoked with prayers and ritual worship in most of the countries. In India even before the Vedic times, the tradition of snake-worship was in vogue.
The celebration of Nag Panchami involves a number customs and rituals to be performed. Some of the places in the country also follow the tradition of worshipping live snakes. It is believed that worshipping on the day of Nag Panchami provide protection from snake bites. Devotees in large numbers visit the nearby temples to offer prayers. People of some villages also search for snakes in snake holes to offer milk to the snakes.he will be blessed by lord shiva .there is a legend also that when Devtas and Ashurs were having Samudarmanthan. Vish was coming out of sea and Lord shiva drink that Vish to save all life. Snakes drink Vish with Lord Shiva and shiva boon all snake that if anybody worship snake then that puja will be in his name.
It is believed that the serpent creatures Krisinask preserve our agricultural property. Active role of environment and forest has seen snakes.
On this day, married women and girls wake up early in the morning to bathe, arrange for Puja, and go to the nearest ant hill (snake's home). They perform puja to the snake's home and pray to the Snake God for the wellness of their families. If there is no ant hill nearby, they offer puja to snake statues erected in nearby temples. A portion of milk used for puja is taken back home and offered to everyone as prasad.
