Saint Kabir Das was born in 1398 AD in India. He lived for 120 years and is said to have relinquished his body in 1518. And this period is also said to be the beginning of Bhakti Movement in India. Saint Kabir was born near Banaras in a Muslim family. He was a weaver by profession. He grew in the impassioned poetry and deep philosophy of the Persian mystics like Jalaludin Rumi. As we know, Saint Kabir was a Hindu but he was brought up in a Muslim family. Therefore, he has achieved a part of affection of both Hindu and Muslim belief and freely used symbols from both religions. Kabir Das ranks among the World’s greatest poets. His poetry has something very unique and attractive lyrics which directly connects you with the God.
From Hinduism he accepts the concept of reincarnations and the law of Karma. From Islam e takes the affirmation of the single God. The basic religious principles he upholds are simple. The Holy Guru Granth Sahib contains over 500 verses by Kabir Das. The Sikh community and others who follow the Holy Guru Granth Sahib, holds Kabir in the same reverence as the other 10 Gurus. According to Saint Kabir, an individual’s life always revolves around two spiritual principles. First one is the personal soul i.e Jivatma and the other is God i.e Parmatma. It is Kabir’s brooding that salvation is the process of bringing and uniting these two divine principles.
Kabir Das openly criticized all sects and gave a new direction to the Indian Philosophy. And this has happened due to his straight forward approach that has universal appeal. It is for this reason that Kabir Das is held in high esteem all over the world. His poetry is that he picks up situations that we face in our daily life. Thus, even today, Kabir’s poetry is relevant and helpful in guiding and regulating our lives, both in social and spiritual context. The Kabir Panth regards Kabir as its principal guru or even as a divinity. The broad range of traditions on which Kabir Das has had an impact is testimony to his massive authority, even for those whose beliefs and practices he criticized so unsparingly. From early on, his presence in anthologies of north Indian bhakti(devotional) poetry is remarkable.
Kabir Das was a master or Sant Sat Guru of inner Light and Sound Mysticism/ Surat Shabda Yoga and Sant Mat (Path of the Maters). He was a great musician and poet in love and devotion for the one Formless God. He was a teacher who taught the eastern mysticism and Gnosticism. Even he had tried to eliminate the caste system and shown his character as a social reformer. He was considered to be one of India’s greatest poet and Vaishnava devotees in Hinduism, whereas in Islam he was considered as a Sufi Master and Murshid.
